If you did add several email accounts to the Thunderbird client, then you might want to sort the email account list on the left side of Thunderbird. If you tried it, you maybe noticed that it is not possible. But, there is a way to make it possible. You can install plug-ins or so-called add-ons for your Mozilla Thunderbird client. If you use Mozilla Firefox as a web browser for your daily internet activity, you might know that this is pretty common and great feature of the Mozilla tools as it allows a lot of customization. But now let´s talk again about Thunderbird…
So, how can we sort the email accounts we added to Thunderbird? First we need an add-on for Thunderbird which is called Manually sort folders. While I linked the add-on here right now, there is also another way to install the plug-in to your Thunderbird client.
1. First open your Thunderbird email client and click in the top menu on “tools” and there on “Add-ons”.
2. The Thunderbird add-on windows opened. There is a search box at the top on the right. Type in “Manually sort folders” and press enter.
3. The “Manually sort folders” add-on should now be in the search results. Just press install next to it and wait until the download is finished.
4. Either click on restart now or restart Thunderbird manually. Installation done!
Now we have to open up the Thunderbird addon window again if it is not already opened. If not, then open it as earlier (Point 1 above).
We need to open the extensions tab on the left side. There we will see what kind of plug-ins we have installed. If everything is done correctly, then the “Manually sort folders” add-on should be in the list too. We now should click on options (I marked it with a red arrow).
This will open the window of the add-on. We could even sort folders with the add-on but what we want to do now is sorting the email account list on the left side of Thunderbird. That´s why we click on the “Sort accounts” tab in the add-on options. From there on everything should be self-explanatory. You will see all your email accounts which you added to Thunderbird and you can now sort them with help of the up and down arrows of the add-on. Simply click on one of the email accounts and use the up and down arrows to sort the account like you want. Do this with every email account and everything is done!

excellent, well done it is so easy explained than other sites that confused me

Thanks so much! So easy to follow and understand!
Thanks for the comment Donna… I am glad you like this solution too!
After installing the plug-in, the accounts do not show up in the panels for me to be able to move them. Restarted/re-installed several times, no change to issue
I hope you got it to work. For me it’s still working. Maybe your Thunderbird is not up to date? I can’t see why there is a problem, it totally works for me.
