Sequel of the next WoW expansion already in the works too…
Blizzard did let the cat out of the bag last week. It´s now known that the next World of Warcraft expansion will be called Warlords of Draenor. But Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Morhaime states now in an interview with Polygon, that they even have already a team workin on a Warlords of Draenor sequel. In other words, Blizzard plans to release WoW expansions more frequently than they did before.
Mike Morhaime said: “We’ve already started working on the expansion after this one (Warlords of Draenor). We’ve never done that in the past. We’ve been doing one expansion at a time, sort of a very linear content creation model, and we’ve looked at ways that we can parallelize that. So that while we’re working on this expansion we’re looking at the new one.”
Looks like Blizzard noticed that many players get bored if they go through the content so fast. The main problem I see here is that the latest World of Warcraft was tailored for the casual player or at least for those who do not want to put too much time into the game. But it seems that players do rather look for engaging and long-lasting difficult content like it was in Classic WoW and Burning Crusade up to Wrath of the Lich King, instead of the easiness and not much time-consuming content we have seen with Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria.
But it seems that Blizzard found a different cause for the problem. They mean the frequency of fresh content should be raised…
“It’s going to be on us and our development team to continually look at ways to evolve the game and keep it relevant, and look for new ways of maintaining engagement within the game. We view expansions as a huge opportunity to do that.”
Mike Morhaime states about the expansions “We recognize that we need to release them on a faster cadence than we have in the past. So we’re investing in the team and our resources to enable us to do that.”
So, what is your opinion? Do you think it is the frequency of content that should be raised or do you think that the difficulty, engagement and time to achieve things in-game should go back to a level like it was for example in Burning Crusade?
