Female Mallard

Here is a photo of a mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), also called wild duck. The duck in the photo is a female mallard, the males look very different and have a green head, with brighter and different plumage, and at the neck it looks as if they have a white collar. I have a post where you can see both a female and male mallard, the male is on the left and the female on the right. But I think the photo is not as great as the close-up photo of the female duck that you can see here in my … Continue reading Female Mallard

A Tufted Duck

Here is a photo of a tufted duck (Aythya fuligula). The image is not that sharp because I had to crop heavily. But I wanted to show the tufted duck anyway because I believe that I never did so on my blog. But I guess the image is not too bad, you can see the subject well. I believe I have some better photos of this species somewhere in my library, I will upload them in the future if that is the case. The photo was taken near a pond called Herrenteich in Reinfeld. Stray Glaucous Gull

As almost everywhere near the coast, it’s also easy to find gulls near the German coast, for example herrings gulls. It’s however less likely that you will find a glaucous gull (Larus hyperboreus) here at the German coast, but that’s exactly what happened to me during a hike through the Schellbruch. I was wondering why the gull looked so different compared to other gulls and after researching I found out that it’s a less common gull. In other words, the habitat of this gull species is much further north in the subpolar zone and in the arctic polar region. But … Continue reading Stray Glaucous Gull

Chaffinch Snapshot

Photography is about the moment, and with bird photography the moment is often very short. I noticed that a lot of photographers do only show perfect images, but for me photography is not only about perfection but as said about the moment and of course about the subject. In this post you can see a photo of a male chaffinch with nuptial plumage. I could only react, in hope that the camera was set right and one second later the bird flew away and I did not get a second chance. The composition after cropping is ok, but I do … Continue reading Chaffinch Snapshot

Old Female Eurasian Blackcap Bird

Not every photo comes with a happy story. When I did hike through a small forest in Reinfeld, I noticed a bird sound in the shrubs. I found the bird in the photo of this post close to me, I was surprised because the bird was just a few meters away from me and it did not fly away when I came closer. Birds don’t let you come that close, and here is the sad story, the did just walk away from me, which is why I assumed that it had trouble to fly. I thought it was an old … Continue reading Old Female Eurasian Blackcap Bird

A Sparrow Searching For Prey

I didn’t take a lot of new photos over the last weeks, but as I mentioned often, this is not really a problem because my backlog is still huge. In this post I want to show you a bird photo again, and I am sure it should be a sparrow. I assume it is a female house sparrow but now I go out on a limb, because I am not really an ornithology expert. It seems the bird searched for insects and found gnats. It could even be that the bird searched the prey to feed the own fledglings, because … Continue reading A Sparrow Searching For Prey
