How To Limit The FPS In Mass Effect Andromeda

Mass Effect Andromeda

Introduction

As in several other games, you can also cap or limit the FPS in Mass Effect Andromeda. In this post I will just explain how to do that, you can decide on your own if it makes sense in your case. I mention that, because I am aware of the fact that there are people out there who like FPS caps, and those who argue against FPS caps, and it’s a never-ending discussion. If you still want to know why I do cap my FPS in most games, check my old Battlefield 4 FPS limit article about it out. In case you want to do the same in Mass Effect Andromeda, the post you read right now is the guide for you.

UPDATE: It seems the FPS limit command doesn’t work anymore in Mass Effect Andromeda. In case it’s working again, please mention it in a comment!

How to cap the FPS in Mass Effect Andromeda

Like previous EA titles, there is also a big list of console commands in Mass Effect Andromeda as well. You can either use the commands in a config file to make your settings permanent, or you can type them into the console to activate them for the time until you exit the game. We will need the console command “gametime.maxvariablefps” without the quotation marks. So, add the following command to your config or type it into the console, if you do for example want to limit it to 61 frames per second…

gametime.maxvariablefps 61

The 61 is the number that works well with my 60Hz screen, make sure to use a cap that works well for you and your screen. As said, if you did use the command with the Andromeda console, the cap will be active until you close the game, if you create a config file for Andromeda, the command will be active until you remove the line or the whole file.

  1. Hey, thanks. I’ve got a problem: the fps counter shows up when using that command, but the fps limiter doesn’t work. Whenever I use the command, e.g. gametime.maxvariablefps 61, it just replies “Win32 result: 61” and nothing happens. Tried putting it in the user.cfg instead, nothing happens. Any idea what’s going on?

    1. So, when you display the FPS, it still goes over 61 frames? I can’t test this right now, but I will look into this later and see if I have the same problem.
