Tension In The Neck

That feeling when you can’t turn your head to one side anymore. It seems I have a tension in the neck. I had this a few times in my life, I guess we all had this at least once in our life? I still can remember the last time I had that, it was quite annoying. Now I have it again and it happened when I looked behind me, it seems I twisted a muscle or nerve while doing this. You know when you get old, ok now I am kidding because once I had a tension in the neck after a soccer match as a teenager as well, it can just happen.

It’s not that I will die because of it, but it is extremely annoying and even writing this post is somehow a pain too. I took a midday nap today and when I woke up it was worse, of course, because I probably turned to the side where my neck muscles are now tense while sleeping. I tried to watch TV but even that is quite difficult now. It’s quite a while ago when I had this the last time, but my experience is that it will go away after three or four days.

Too bad that I don’t have a hot-water bag at home, I know this would help, maybe I should fill a bottle with warm water, I could use that for some minutes, it’s just not that comfy like a bag. Anyway, I don’t cry, tension in the neck is more annoying than painful, unless I look to the left now. I will wait this out on the weekend, otherwise I might need a massage next week.

  1. I’m assuming you tried ibuprofen. I definitely get this once or twice a year as well, and it’s a pain especially when driving. I could’ve sworn one time I managed to shift around just right and things seemed to slip back into place, as if a muscle was caught on a vertebra. More realistically, going for a job helped too. All the muscles in my body eventually warmed up, and then I was able to exhaust myself enough to get better sleep. But I’m a computer programmer and not the one you should take seriously ๐Ÿ™‚ What I’m sure everyone will agree will ultimately fix it completely is time and sleep. Hope you feel better soon!

    • Not yet. But I have some Ibus here but the pain is tolerable at the moment, it’s because I am home and move my head not too much as I am just reading through the web right now. I might take one tommorow morning after breakfast when I leave the home, because as you said, outsite where you look to the right or left on the streets, it’s painful then.

      Yea I guess most people do actually think that they shouldn’t move their head in this case, but I have read in one article that moving is good to loosen the tension. I think you are right when you say the muscles warm up on this way. When I was not at home today, I got the same impression after walking through the city. Also I’ve done some exercises today that I have read about and it helped a little bit too.

      Haha, I take geeks very seriously. I learned some Visual Basic back then, but I assume this is a language from yesterday (not sure) ๐Ÿ˜€ Sadly I did put my nose into every computer niche, so that I never learned something fully. I’ve taken bits and bobs from here and there. I’m glad you found your passion. I can imagine coding is fun once you get the things down. I think I get your point, we probably should compansate the time we spend with the computer and do also more sports to be less “vulnerable” for things like the neck problems. ๐Ÿ˜€ Winter is just not very motivating to do sports ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. I have found a liniment is very useful for this (e.g. menthol and eucalyptus). Wash area first, apply the liniment, gently rub in, apply a warm towel and lie down on the other side. You’ll feel the tension give when your head sinks into the pillow. The best I found was Olbas Oil or Tiger Balm, if you can get either, but many such oils or creams will do.

    You might also try a breathing exercise. Every time you breath out, let all tensions collapse.

    • I agree, I had good experience with liniment too in the past when I had a neck tension. But I didn’t went to the drug store today as my neck tension seems to fade away. I had some trouble in the night but now it’s much better. I think it will be good on sunday or monday, if not I really will buy a liniment. I’ve done some exercises that I found in an article about neck tension, that seemed to help quite a lot.
