A Perfect Burger

Perfect burger

Today I visited my mother as we wanted to cook something together. We decided to make burgers. We both think that the burgers of the known fast food chains are not very special, they taste a little bit like cardboard or something as drily. But creating our own hamburger? We never did that, it’s simply not that common here.

To be honest, I pretty much like the idea of eating burgers, at least if they are freshly made somewhere, but not those you get from the very well-known big fast food chains. So, we though we should try to make them ourselves. We bought all the ingredients, the best ingredients we could get and started the fun.

I have my favorite local store when it comes to vegetables and meat. We went there and bought some really good-looking tomatoes and iceberg lettuce. This particular store does always have vegetables that actually taste extremely fresh compared to the vegetables you get in the other stores in our district.

We also bough pickled cucumbers, we call them Danish cucumbers. We didn’t create our own sauce though. We bought one ready-made spicy red hamburger sauce and one yellow dressing sauce probably known as remoulade. The butcher in the same store has also the greatest meat in our district, we bought one pound of beef.

Apart from that, we also found burger buns in the same store. My mother had onions at home as same as the pepper and salt to flavour the beef. We started to make them, although we didn’t know what to expect from our first self-made burgers. After the first bit we both where sure, they are extremely delicious.

If you use all these fresh ingredients, the burger tastes so much better than any other burger you get from the known chains, it’s world’s apart of course. After eating we both were sure these were the best burgers we ever ate. We were pretty much amazed and will do this more often now.

Her husband was on a class meeting in another federal state, we had the unfair idea to send him a picture of our freshly made burgers, in fact we did send the pictures to several people in our address list on the phones, so shameless. I still think the photo looks mouth-watering, we need to do it again.

    P.S.: Here Whataburger is a chain, but still has good burgers. But non-chain restaurants have excellent ones, too.

    • Haha, we would have liked it to have some visitors enjoying the burgers with us. ๐Ÿ™‚

      I think we don’t have the chain Whataburger in our city. We have for example Mc Donalds of course as same as Burger King. When I was younger, I liked to eat there, however, with time they really got worse and worse. The last burgers I ate there tasted like cardboard or something as dry (laugh).

      I agree, there are most likely very good burger chains elsewhere and of course small burger restaurants anyway. But in our area we couldn’t find good ones recently.

  2. Home made burgers are the best. McDonalds are probably the worst I’ve had. I prefer those from Burger King which we call Hungry Jack’s over here. Those at least have a bit more salad on them. When I go to McDonalds I generally order a salad wrap instead of a burger now. Before we had these chains, and I’m old enough to remember this, burgers only came from fish and chip shops and they could be very filling. I still prefer a fish and chip shop burger with the lot to the American style ones any day. By the way I once had a visit from an American penfriend who was amazed that Australians put beetroot on our burgers. Do you do that in Germany? It’s very nice with lettuce, tomato and cheese or add pineapple and you can call it a Hawaiian Burger ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I visited McDonalds more often when I was younger. There was a Mc Donalds next to the trade school I learned at back then. I bought burgers there each day during break, however, I guess we all did that more for practical reasons.

      But I’d say they had much better quality 10 years ago, last year when I was in the city I got hungry and went to Mc again, it was awful what I got there, so dry, you could at the same time eat a toast without something on it and it would make no difference (you make the point, they rarely put salad on it). Also you notice with the salad if things are fresh or not. After trying different Mc Donalds in our city, I gave up on it, I do really avoid them today. Their stores are most of the time empty today, some did even closed as if the hype would be over, most people I know avoid them as well. At least in our town they are completely out.

      We have a small fast food restaurant in our city, everyone here knows the restaurant, it’s a store running since over 20 years, they make money like crazy I guess but they refuse to expand (they don’t even deliver with cars), they rather care about just one store as it seems. I assume quality control works better with just one store. If you ate there 15 years ago or today, there is no real difference, they are still as great. However, locally such a good image, a lot of peoply buy there, which means you need to wait 15 or 20 minutes in line before you can even order food there. The fast food restaurant is called “Merlin” named like the wizard, and well, they really conjure good stuff. I never had a flyer of them in my hand, I never saw an ad, I assume they do business with the idea “Create great stuff, it’ll circulate”. So, I agree, you can get better stuff in smaller stores that take things serious and concentrate on one location.

      No, never heard of anyone using beetroot on burgers, but I take your suggestion and will try it out next time if we make burgers again. ๐Ÿ™‚ I am always open for new flavour ideas ๐Ÿ™‚
      But I would try without pineapple, I don’t like the pineapple taste anyhow ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. I should have had a bigger dinner apparently. I had no idea I was going to be reading about homemade burgers tonight. Looks great, and also a masterful job with photographing the burger and the process. I used to experiment with burger making long ago. I’d chop up various things and choose some spices to add into the ground beef.

    • I know what you mean, I sometimes browse Pinterest to find photo inspiration or to just keep me busy while watching cool photos. And there are hundreds of delicious dishes posted, it always makes me hungry right in the moment ๐Ÿ˜€

      Thanks, I think I placed the burger right for the photo. About technical stuff, I did let the camera decide for all settings except that I manually focused and that I set low ISO as we had nice sunlight near the window. Worked out well anyhow.

      Experimenting with burgers is the right sentence, we just thought “We can try this with all kind of different ingredients in the future”. Add things to the beef, that sounds nice too, I do this often with meatballs, the flavour of the ingrediets will mix with the meat while roasting, tasty.
